The Herald Sun has revealed the new co-host for the AFL Footy Show going forward this season.
Geelong number one ticket holder Rebecca Maddern has been signed by Channel Nine to work alongside North Melbourne president James Brayshaw this season, while normal co-host Garry Lyon battles depression.
Footy Show veteran Sam Newman says he welcomes the news of Rebecca Maddern signing with the team and says it will open a new era for the show.
“The critics say our show is blokey and male-oriented (so) we think this is a very good opportunity to diversify and spread our wings,” Newman says.
“We thought ‘we have to be careful this doesn’t look like tokenism’ but when the right person came available, it was unanimously agreed that this would be a great thing to do.”
Maddern's contract is coming to an end at rivals Channel Seven and says the opportunity was too good not to take up.

“I was looking for new challenges in life and this was an opportunity too good to pass up. It combines my journalism with my love of AFL football," Maddern says.
Channel Nine is adamant that Maddern is not a make-shift replacement, instead if Lyon does return, it will become a show hosted by three.
