Geelong champion and recent 300 gamer Jimmy Bartel has made it fairly clear.
He won't be playing in the VFL in 2017.
Bartel is out of contract at the end of the season and says he won't stay at the club in he is only acting as a playing mentor and playing some games at VFL level.
"You don't go into a year planning on playing VFL football," he told SEN Breakfast on Thursday.
"So obviously the idea would never sit comfortably for you.
"You're there to play AFL football and you're there to play well."
CEO Brian Cook confirmed earlier this week that discussions had begun for Bartel to play some games in the VFL as the Cats look to continue blooding their younger players.
"I don't think I would sign up for next year to be a VFL footballer, to just use in the case of emergency," he said.
"If I was playing VFL football it would be there to go back and press for selection."
