Essendon young star Zach Merrett will lead his team into battle against the Gold Coast Suns this weekend with Brendon Goddard ruled out with a groin injury.

Merrett, 20 years of age, will become one of the club's youngest players to captain the side in the club illustrious history.

Taken with pick 26 in the 2013 National Draft, Merrett has taken this difficult year in his stride, averaging 29 disposals and is a clear favourite to win his first, of what seems like many, best and fairests at the club.
